Learning Your Letters and Sounds

                                                            The Alphabet Chart

Recognition of capital and lower case letters, as well as the sound that the letter makes is important to sounding out words. Once they are familiar with the alphabet and sounds (A says /a/ as in apple, /a/ /a/   /a/) then you can give them a word such as “basket” or “pumpkin” and have them tell you the letter and sound it begins with, or ends with. Another skill is to sound out a word and ask your child what word it is. What word is /c/ /a/ /t/? (Just say the sound of the letter) The child’s response is “cat”.
